Quick question—do you feel guilty buying new paper books? Or maybe you've switched to ebooks thinking they're the greener choice? I've been there too.
I love the smell of a fresh paperback, but I also want to do what's right for the planet 🌍. So I decided to look into it—which one's actually better for the environment?
Let's break it down, no fluff, just real talk!💬

Paper books: the cozy classic

There's something magical about flipping through real pages. But here's the catch: making paper books uses trees, water, ink, and energy. Plus, they need to be printed, packed, and shipped—which adds to their carbon footprint 🚛.
On average, each paper book emits around 1 to 2.7 kg CO₂ (depends on where and how it's printed). And if they don't get recycled? Yup, they end up in landfills 😬.
That said, they can last a long time, especially if passed down or donated. And they don't need power to use—just light!

Ebooks: sleek and convenient

Ebooks, on the other hand, don't need paper or shipping. No trees cut, no ink spilled. Sounds perfect, right? Well... not quite. 😅
Here's the thing—your e-reader (like a Kindle or tablet) does have an environmental cost. Making just one device involves mining metals, using plastics, and a good amount of electricity. One estimate says it takes around 50–100 ebooks to "offset" the carbon cost of a single e-reader. After that, you're in the green 🌱.
Bonus: no clutter at home and you can carry 1,000+ books in your bag 👜📱. That's a win!

So which one's better?

Honestly, it depends on your habits.
• If you read a ton of books (think 20+ per year), ebooks are likely more eco-friendly in the long run.
• If you only read a few a year, or you always borrow, buy secondhand, or share paper books? Stick with paper.
• Also, if your device gets replaced every year… that eco-balance resets. 😬

Let's get real 💭

For me personally, I do a mix:
📖 Paper books when I want to unplug or gift something meaningful
📱 Ebooks when I travel or binge-read thrillers at 2AM 😅
It's not all-or-nothing. And both have their place.

Your thoughts? 💬

Do you prefer ebooks or paper books? Have you ever thought about the environmental side of it before?
Drop a 📖 for paper books and a 📱 for ebooks in the comments! Let's see which side wins. And hey, maybe share your current read too—I'm always looking for new recs! 💛
